Today (July 31, 2006) at approximately 3:19 CDT, Firefox reached the 200 million downloads milestone. These include downloads directly through Mozilla's site (not including the many downloads at download.com and the like). Upgrades are also not included. Because of this, it is safe to assume that the number of downloads is a good estimate for the number of Firefox users around the globe.
The minute before the mark, the Spread Firefox site had it's usual banner. Upon reloading (to get the new counter number), they switched out their banner with a celebratory design. Because the RSS feed that delivers the downloads is only updated every few minutes, an exact screen shot of 200 million downloads was unachievable, and the time at which the mark was reached can only be estimated. However, for your amusement, I took a screen shot of the first report from the feed on the SFX site.
To celebrate this achievement for Open Source, and usability on the web, I am offering for anyone with screen shots of hitting this mark to submit them to my gallery. Share your excitement with the world!
